Toshiba has launched a new SCiB 24V battery pack, a lithium-ion solution engineered for marine, automotive and heavy equipment sectors.

The product has already been deployed on the E-Float Terrace, an electric boat from Yamaha Motor, which is scheduled to begin offering cruise experiences in Yokahoma, Japan this October.

The company says demand is rising for lithium-ion battery alternatives that are lighter, more efficient, longer lasting, and more environmentally friendly than their lead-acid counterparts.

The new battery pack is designed to meet the D23 size specified by the Japanese Industrial Standard for starter lead-acid batteries, enabling straightforward replacement of existing 24V units.

It can be deployed as a standalone united or configured in series and parallel – up to two and six respectively – enabling it to reach a range of power requirements.

Toshiba says its capability to handle high-load operations such as engine starting makes it suitable for use in marine vessels, commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.

“We engineer SCiB batteries for outstanding reliability in demanding environments,” said Toshihiko Takaoka, VP, battery division at Toshiba Corporation. “The 24V battery pack combines excellent low-temperature performance and vibration resistance with robust waterproofing certified to the IPX9K and IPX7 standards.

“Its exceptional long-life performance helps reduce maintenance requirements for electric boats. To extend these advantages to more partners, we will continue to pursue further orders across marine and other applications.”
