Danish drive system and battery developer EPTechnologies will launch its new electric outboard at METS in November. The Falcon system is, its developers claim, the lightest, quietest and most efficient outboard in its class.
The ground-up design includes a compact, lightweight build intended to minimize drag, improve efficiency, and maximize onboard space for additional batteries. At the heart of the 130kW drive is an axial flux design, which weighs just 27kg – traditional motors with comparable power typically weigh around 117kg. Adjustable shaft length offers flexibility and a high level of efficiency. The new electric drive is suitable for a wide range of performance needs and vessel types, from leisure yachts to small passenger ferries and rescue boats. A more powerful 230kW version is currently in development to extend the product line.
The Falcon‘s steering system was completely re-engineered – now, only the propeller and propeller hub rotate while the motor block remains stationary. This setup protects sensitive engine components and improves weight distribution and stability, particularly in twin outboard configurations. The 360° rotating propeller hub also offers maneuverability in confined spaces, eliminating the need for additional bow thrusters.
To complement the system, EPTechnologies also offers its own range of ultra-light, highly efficient batteries, developed and produced in-house. These can be tailored to suit the specific needs of each vessel, ensuring ideal weight distribution and optimized configuration.
