AET has signed an agreement for its first hybrid electric dynamic positioning shuttle tanker (DPST), marking a further step in the company’s fleet expansion and energy transition plans.

The vessel will be built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corp. and is scheduled for delivery in 2028. The 154,000dwt Suezmax DPST will be equipped with an electric energy storage system and designed to be dual-fuel and ethanol-ready, according to the company.

AET said the new-build will operate on long-term charter and is intended to strengthen its DPST capability as offshore energy producers seek lower-emissions transportation options. The addition of hybrid electric propulsion is expected to expand fuel flexibility across the company’s tanker fleet.

AET currently operates 17 DPSTs across Brazil and the North and Barents seas and said further growth is planned. The company has been introducing dual-fuel capability across its tanker segments as part of its strategy to support lower-emissions operations.

Nick Potter, president and CEO of AET, said, “AET owns and operates one of the youngest and largest DPST fleets serving Brazil and the North and Barents seas. Our collective experience in dual-fuel vessels and growth in the DPST segment has been driven by deep partnerships. Our ambition is to continue extending our industry-leading position and deliver reliable, safe and sustainable DPST solutions to customers worldwide.”

The new DPST is designed to improve energy efficiency and support future ethanol dual-fuel operations, aligning with AET’s multifuel fleet growth program and broader plans to deploy lower-emissions technologies across its vessels.
