Ecoport II, Valenciaport’s initiative to consolidate an environmentally friendly port community, has set objectives focused on improving energy efficiency through the development of renewable energy sources and the installation of electric charging points for ships, in line with Valenciaport’s Net Zero Emissions plan.
The Net Zero Emissions plan aims to achieve carbon neutrality at the ports of Valencia, Sagunt and Gandia by 2035. Within this timeframe, Valenciaport also expects to reach energy self-sufficiency, producing the energy required to meet consumption linked to port economic and commercial activity. The plan foresees total investment of €900m (US$1bn), comprising €605m (US$710m) from the Port Authority of Valencia (Valenciaport) and €295m (US$345m) from private investment.
These projects were the focus of a recent Ecoport II working group meeting, which reviewed actions implemented during 2025 and outlined priorities for the coming years. Among the planned measures are the installation of onshore power supply (OPS) charging points for ships at various terminals, alongside initiatives aimed at achieving energy self-sufficiency across port facilities by 2035. Currently, 18% of the energy consumed at the ports of Valencia, Sagunt and Gandia is produced by photovoltaic installations already in operation.
Valenciaport has promoted environmental policies for nearly 30 years through the Ecoport project, which currently brings together 38 member companies working to develop and apply environmental management systems across the port community.
The working group meeting also included updates on related projects. One of these was the Clever Tool developed within the ARSINOE project to support Valenciaport’s Climate Change Observatory, which was presented by Noemi Monterde, senior project manager at the Valenciaport Foundation.
Participants were also informed about the NeXTraIn.PortS project, which focuses on training and skill development for mobility professionals at the ports of Valencia, Rotterdam, Livorno and Piraeus. The initiative took place in Venice in November 2025 and was also presented by the Valenciaport Foundation.
In addition, Noelia Martínez, head of sustainability and good governance at KPMG in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia, outlined how environmental management systems can be integrated into sustainability information management systems through the Ecoport project. She also addressed the monetization of energy savings through Energy Savings Certificates.
