Garrett Motion has announced the first commercial application of its large-frame MEG turbocharger platform. The company is to collaborate with Weichai Power on next-generation large-bore engines for marine and power generation applications.

The deployment marks the initial commercial use of Garrett’s largest turbocharger platform, which has been developed for marine propulsion, high-output power generation and backup generator systems. The MEG platform is designed to support multiple fuel types, including diesel, natural gas and alternative fuels.

Garrett said the turbocharger is intended for large-bore engines operating in demanding environments. The aim is to improve efficiency, reliability and fuel consumption while helping operators meet emission targets.

Olivier Rabiller, president and CEO of Garrett Motion, said, “This collaboration marks a key milestone in our long-standing partnership with Weihai Power. It underscores Garrett’s growing presence in large-engine segments for marine and industrial applications with our MEG portfolio.”

The companies have collaborated since 1998 across the on-highway, off-highway and industrial sectors. The new deployment extends their partnership into higher-power marine and industrial engine applications as operators face increasing pressure to improve fuel efficiency and comply with tightening emission regulations.

Garett said the introduction of the MEG turbocharger platform is part of its broader strategy to expand advanced turbocharging technologies into large-engine and multifuel applications.
