Lehmann Marine to supply battery systems for three Hamburg electric ferries

Lehmann Marine will supply battery systems for three fully electric passenger ferries being built for operation at the Port of Hamburg, in what the company says is its largest order to date.

The vessels are being constructed by SET Schiffbau- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft Tangermünde for HADAG Seetouristik und Fährdienst, which operates public ferry services in Hamburg. The three new-build ferries, known as Type 2030e, will be HADAG’s first fully electric vessels and are scheduled to enter service in 2028.

Each ferry will be equipped with Lehmann Marine’s modular Cube energy storage system, with an installed battery capacity of 3.8MWh per vessel. The systems are intended to support fully electric, zero-emission operation in port conditions. The ferries will be 30m long with an 8m beam and are expected to carry up to 250 passengers.

The Cube battery system is already deployed on multiple vessels worldwide and is designed with a modular architecture to support integration into different vessel types and simplify onboard servicing and maintenance.

The project forms part of HADAG’s fleet modernization program and broader efforts to support more sustainable transportation in the Port of Hamburg. By introducing electric ferries, the operator aims to reduce emissions and noise associated with urban maritime transportation.

Alexander Lehmann, managing director of Lehmann Marine, said, “As a company with roots in Hamburg competing in a strong global market, we are proud to contribute to the electrification of the HADAG fleet in the Port of Hamburg. This project demonstrates that high-performance battery systems are now a proven and practical solution for the emission-free operation of passenger vessels.”

Lars Köhler, head of sales at Lehmann Marine, added, “Fully electric propulsion systems are no longer just a technical alternative in ports – they are the decisive step toward eliminating emissions that affect residents and tourists alike. Our Cube system enables quiet, clean, and climate-friendly port operations that protect the ecosystem and improve the environmental footprint of the Port of Hamburg.”

SET Shipyard, HADAG, and Lehmann Marine collaborated on the project, with the shipyard and operator selecting Lehmann Marine as the battery technology partner for the vessels.
