Goltens has launched Captain Arctic, a 69m exploration vessel designed to operate with near-zero emissions in some of the world’s most environmentally sensitive waters.

The launch follows the completion of hull fabrication by Goltens Dubai and marks the transition to outfitting and systems integration before the vessel’s first voyage through Arctic regions. Built for French owner Selar, the project brings together partners including Chantier Naval de l’Océan Indien (CNOI) in Mauritius, combining expertise in advanced fabrication and renewable propulsion technologies.

At the heart of Captain Arctic’s design is a renewable energy system that aims to reduce carbon emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional ships. The vessel will rely primarily on wind-assisted propulsion using rigid sails integrated with photovoltaic solar panels.

Sandeep Seth, CEO of Goltens Worldwide, said, “The successful launch of the Captain Arctic underscores Goltens’ leadership in delivering practical engineering solutions that advance maritime sustainability. This vessel is not only a technological triumph but also a symbol of what can be achieved when innovation, craftsmanship and environmental responsibility align.”

In addition to the hull fabrication, Goltens Dubai’s role included manufacturing the vessel’s king post and supplying and installing watertight doors. The next phase will focus on outfitting, systems integration and commissioning.

Once operational, Captain Arctic will function as a platform for sustainable exploration and luxury hospitality, designed to demonstrate that renewable technologies can be deployed in commercial and leisure vessels without compromising comfort or range.
